There have been 35 winning favourites of the Melbourne Cup and 72 Cup favourites have finished in the first three. The shortest price winning favourote was Phar Lap in the 1930 renewal when he returned odds of 8/11.

When Viewed won the 2008 Melbourne Cup he was the longest price winner at 40/1 in the last twenty years. The Luca Cumani trained Mad Rush went off 9/2 favourite in that race eventually finishing 7th.

Makybe Diva and Fiorente are the only winning favourite in the last ten years, with Makybe Diva winning the first of her three Melbourne Cups in 2003, while Fiorente took the spoils in 2013. In the lead up to the race such Melbourne Cup trials as the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Mackinnon Stakes will give punters a better idea of the form as the big race gets closer.

There will be a handful of European raiders making their way to Flemington Racecourse on the first Tuesday of November.
