Melbourne Cup Fashion

As with Royal Ascot in the UK, the Melbourne Cup is as synonymous with fashion as it is with horse racing. It's the Australians big day out and they love nothing better than showing themselves off in their best clobber.

This was not always the case as when looking into the Melbourne Cup history it wasn't until the crowds began to amass to Flemington Racecourse at the turn of the twentieth century that this was the 'place' to be seen in social circles.

In 1962 the Victoria Racing Club formed an initiative to get more women to the racing by announcing the first ever 'Fashions on the Field' event. The competition is still going strong today despite some hiccups along the way and it's very much part of the whole Melbourne Cup experience.

As part of the Fashions on the Field festivities there are many competitions, including a menswear category. The competition has become so huge that there are qualifiers to actually make it to the finals which take place over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
