Melbourne Cup Weights

Melbourne Cup Weights

The Melbourne Cup is a handicap contest which means that the jockey and riding equipment have to add up to a certain weight, given to their horse in order to give all Melbourne Cup runners an equal chance. This of course isn't necessarily the case as Melbourne Cup trainers will run their horses in different circumstances to give themselves a better chance come the big race.

The minimum weight handicap for the Melbourne Cup is 7-10 and there's no maximum top weight. However, the top weight must not be less than 8-13. The weights are determined by the Victoria Racing Club when the entries are announced in early September.

Then follows a series of cuts where the entries become less and less until they arrive at the final 24, removing the lightest handicaps at each cut stage. Horses can gain weight penalties once they have declared themselves for entry, if for example they win a recognised handicap race of a certain standard.
