As the 2011 Melbourne Cup draws ever closer punters across the land will be looking for the best betting tips and nominations for the big race. We here at the Betting Directory will be giving you as many pointers as possible in trying to find you a winner. The Melbourne Cup isn't the easiest to find a winner though, with around twenty four horses charging around the two mile circuit at Flemington Racecourse. Looking back over the last ten years there have only been two winning favourites and that was the legendary Makybe Diva who followed up her success in 2003 as favourite in 2004 and 2005.
In terms of interest from Europe, the record isn't great, with just one winner and ten placed finishes in the last ten years from 44 Melbourne Cup runners. This makes picking out a winner for the Melbourne Cup that much more difficult than usual and we'd make your first tip to concentrate on horses trained on home soil. In terms of checking out these horses we have our very own Melbourne Cup Form Guide which will help you look at the form and we also highlight the big races in the lead up to November within our Melbourne Cup Trials section.
Favourite for the 2011 Melbourne Cup is the French trained Americain who is looking for back to back winners in the race. Alain De Royer Dupre trains the six year old who won the Drake International Cup on his last start at Moonee Valley.
Another French trained horse Danaden is well fancied, with Michael Delzangles trained five year old a general second favourite with the bookmakers following his win in the Geelong Cup in October.
The home team's chances come in the shape of Lucas Cranach and Niwot, the latter having recieved plenty of support in the betting since his win in the Lexus Stakes on Victoria Derby day at the weekend.
The legendary trainer Bart Cummings looks for another winner in the race with Illo, whilst there's plenty of English interest, with Brian Ellison and Mark Johnston both saddling two runners in the race whilst Ed Dunlop runs Red Cadeaux.
Our very own Chris James has plumbed for second favourite Dunaden in his preview of Tuesday's big race. See what he says about the chances of all the major players right here.
