2009 Melbourne Cup Runners

The final entries have been announced for the 2009 Emirates Melbourne Cup and there are some big named absentees. Long time ante-post favourite and the 2007 winner Efficient will not go to post due to injury and after Viewed's third place finish in the Mackinnon Stakes on Saturday he has now been installed favourite.

24 runners go to post in the Melbourne Cup including the top weight Viewed, who will be bidding for his second win in the race and trainer Bart Cumming's thirteenth. Other notable runners include Alcopop and Godolphin's Crime Scene. There will be three European raiders in the race with Ian Williams Munsef and Gary Moore's Mourilyan joining Crime Scene in the line-up.

Viewed

The 2008 winner went seven races without a win in the last 12 months until his 2 1/4 length win over stablemate Roman Emperor in October's Caulfield Cup. 3rd in Mackinnon Stakes just franks chances.

C'Est La Guerre

Third in the 2008 Melbourne Cup but has done little to suggest he has improved as a five year old with three modest outings in the Spring. 4th in the Makybe Diva Stakes but a big ask to improve on last years running.

Fiumicino

Impressive fifth placed finish in the Caulfield Cup following up a place in The Metroplitan at the beginning of October. Only three career wins and would be a big surprise if he took the prize here.

Master O'Reilly

Consistent stayer but with only two career wins. Fourth in the race last year but heavily campaigned in 2009 with a third place finish in the Makybe Diva Stakes his best effort.

Mourilyan

Interesting runner who has had multiple trainers. Previously trained by John Oxx and Gary Moore, the five year old comes to Flemington off the back of a win in Goodwood's March Stakes at the end of August.

Roman Emperor

Second to stablemate Viewed in the Caulfield Cup has been laid out for this race and seen considerable support in the betting.

Ista Kareem

The oldest horse in the race has raced three modest attempts in the Spring and will be a big price come raceday.

Crime Scene

Prolific racing horse who has run all over the world.8 wins from 27 starts most recently in July winning the Steventon Stakes at Newbury. Modest run in the Geelong Cup since.

Munsef

Interesting European raider having not finished out of the top two in five attempts during the summer. Winner of the Chester Stakes in August and 2nd in Stockholm Cup since. Has a big chance here.

Zavite

7yo Anthony Cummings Outsider with slim hope of placing in first Melbourne Cup. Decent 4th in Herbert Power Stakes but a dissapointing run in the Caulfield Cup since (9th).

Alcopop

Market leader who has come from knowhere to be a serious contender here. 3 1/4 length winner of the Herbert Power and unbeaten in 2009. Worthy favourite.

Harris Tweed

Outsider who shouldn't trouble the announcers. Lightly campaigned finishing tenth last time out in the Caulfield Cup.

Kibbutz

Only one win to his name and finished last of twelve on last visit to Flemington Park.

Newport

Outsider who finihed 9th in the Coongy Cup last time out. Big ask here.

Warringah

Recently sold and previously trained by Sir Michael Stoute.Beaten favourite last time out at Windsor and fine front running display in the Ebor fading to finish fifth. Each-way chances.

Gallions Reach

Rank outsider who finished fifth last time out in the Bendigo Cup.

Spin Around

Old timer goes in his first Melbourne Cup. 10th in the Geelong Cup and an outsider here.

Basaltico

Trainer's only runner in the race after a troubled build up. 7th in the Geelong Cup and only remote each-way chances for this one.

Capecover

A tough task for this outsider, finished 7th in the Herbert Power but will surely find too many better than him here.

Daffodil

Smart New Zealand stayer finished fourth in the Caulfield Cup and has big claims here at a decent price. Won the New Zealand Oaks in fine style last April.

Shocking

Three times a runner-up before landing the Lexus Stakes on Saturday. Plenty of support in the betting since and has a big chance.

Allez Wonder

Lesser known Cummings trained runner not without form having won the Toorak Handicap and a handy 8th in the Caulfield Cup. Worthy each-way claims.

Changingoftheguard

Recently bought from Coolmore the 3yo comes here off a dissapointing 6th place finish in the English St Leger. Abcess in foot has reportedly cleared up and will take his chances with 2010 very much in mind.

Leica Ding

Geelong Cup winner gets into the draw by the skin of her teeth. Looking to emulate Media Puzzle in winning both races.
