The Geelong Cup is another goodMelbourne Cup Trial, albeit run away from Flemington Racecourse. In recent years, the result in the Geelong Cup has been a very good form guide for the Melbourne Cup betting itself, with the Luca Cumani trained Bauer missing out by a nose to Viewed in 2008. The last two winners of the race however have both gone on to win the Melbourne Cup, Americain and Dunaden, both French trained and both completed the double.

There have been two winners of the Geelong Cup in the last ten years who went on to win the Melbourne Cup and there were three others who went on to place in the big race. Also, Zazzman finished third in 2004, a little over a year after winning the Geelong Cup at a huge price of 100/1, so make sure you check those Melbourne Cup runners who ran in this race last year.
The Melbourne Cup odds suggest that the bookmakers don't cut the winners of the Geelong Cup too short. When Media Puzzle won both races in 2002 for European raider Dermot Weld he was by far and away the shortest price contender coming through this trial.
Keep an eye out on this years race on the 19th October as the winner could have a decent price in the antepost betting market.
