Melbourne Cup Favourites
There have been 34 winning favourites of the Melbourne Cup and 70 Cup favourites have finished in the first three. The shortest price winning favourote was Phar Lap in the 1930 renewal when he returned odds of 8/11.
When Viewed won the 2008 Melbourne Cup he was the longest price winner at 40/1 in the last twenty years. The Luca Cumani trained Mad Rush went off 9/2 favourite in that race eventually finishing 7th. Cumani has decided against running the horse in 2009 due to the ground being too hard.

There will be a handful of European raiders making their way to Flemington Racecourse on the first Tuesday of November. Unfortunately, the fancied Dermot Weld trained Profound Beauty has been scratched for the race but the likes of Godolphin and Ballydoyle have entered Kirklees and Age of Aquarious respectively.
Efficient (scratched)
One of the ante-post gambles on the Melbourne Cup has come in the shape of the 2007 winner Efficient. The John Sadler trained six year old certainly knows his way around Flemington Racecourse and comes here in good form after winning the Group 1 Turnbull stakes at the beginning of the October. Before that win he'd had two modest attempts at Caulfield to his name so he comes into the Melbourne Cup nice and fresh.

Alcopop
There's not a lot in the way of form for Jake Stephens five year old Alcopop, but there's been plenty of support since his win in the Herbert Power Stakes on the 10th October. It was an impressive win over the 15/4 favourite Shocking, who also has a Melbourne Cup entry. Alcopop was trading around the 50/1 mark for the big race a month ago but looks like being installed as one of the favourites come race day.

Speed Gifted (scratched)
Bred and trained in the UK in his early life, Speed Gifted certainly has some form to speak of, some of it quite impressive. A beaten favourite at Caulfield in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes in September may have put backers off, but the Lee Freedman trained five year old bounced back in style winning The Metropolitan handicap in October. That three and a quarter victory has earned some supporters and there'll be significant interest on him from European punters come raceday.

Viewed
Viewed was a 40/1 surprise winner at Flemington Racecourse last year when he touched of Bauer to win the Mebourne Cup in thrilling fashion. That was trainer Bart Cummings twelfth win in the race and there can't have been many more surprised than him. The six year old is without a win since last Spring and finished seventh behind Efficient in the Turnbull Stakes last out. However, bookies have slashed his odds from last year and he's amongst the favourites this time around.

Cima De Triomphe (scratched)
Luca Cumani came as close as he'll ever do to winning the Melbourne Cup saddling Bauer to a second place finish by a nose in last years race. After scratching his main hope Mad Rush due to ground concerns it's his stablemate Cima De Triomphe who is the European raiders best chance in 2009. Having raced in the Prix De L'Arc De Triomphe and the Arlington Million he is both well travelled and comfortable in good company. He'll be needing a prep race in October but he certainly looks the pick from Europe.

Latest Odds for the 2009 Melbourne Cup
With less than a month to go the 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient has seen some support to head the betting. Early favourite Vigor is on the drift and with European Raider Profound Beauty having been scratched for the race, Luca Cumani's Cima De Triomphe is the shortest price of the European contingent.
The now Australian trained stayer Speed Gifted has also seen support and is favourite with some bookmakers.
